If you’re anything like me, you’re wondering where this year has gone and looking at the New Year with excitement for a fresh start! All across the world, people look toward the New Year to set goals like saving money, spending more time with family, or learning a new skill. At the top of most New Year’s resolution’s lists are goals related to health like losing weight, exercising regularly, or eating healthier foods. At Inspired Dental, we would like for everyone to consider adding at the top of their New Year’s resolution list: Taking care of my dental health!
Oral health has a direct connection to overall health. Poor oral health can affect the rest of your body because your mouth is the entryway to your digestive and respiratory tracts. Some systemic conditions that are known to be impacted by the condition of the oral health includes atherosclerotic disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, pregnancy, and kidney disease. It has been well understood that good oral care can help to prevent expensive healthcare cost in the future. Good oral health also helps prevent bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. Another bonus is that you get to keep your teeth for a lifetime! A healthy beautiful smile can increase the quality of life from an economic, social, psychological and physical health standpoint.
Here are ways to maintain good oral health:
- Brush teeth after each meal, for at least 2 minutes, spending 30 seconds in each quadrant. Use fluoride toothpaste. Remember to replace your toothbrush every 3 months.
- Floss between teeth to remove food or dental plaque, daily.
- Visit your dentist on a regular basis, which is every 6 months for those with good oral hygiene, or every 3-4 months for those working on improving their oral hygiene.
